I truly believe the wrapping is just as important as the gift inside. A beautifully wrapped present shows you’ve taken that little bit of extra time to make someone feel special, and that’s what gift giving is all about.
Welcome to the first tutorial in my gift wrapping series! Over the coming months, I’ll be learning and sharing simple wrapping ideas, clever techniques and creative finishing touches that anyone can recreate at home. Whether you’re wrapping birthday presents, Christmas gifts or just because, I hope these tutorials inspire you to have fun with your gift wrapping.
For this first tutorial, I’ll show you how to wrap a book (or something similar in shape) with a hidden pocket that’s perfect for tucking in a card, gift voucher or a little chocolate surprise. It’s an easy technique that adds an extra special touch, and of course, I’ve used one of my own wrapping paper designs to bring it all together, our brand new Harlequin patterned paper.
Let’s get wrapping!
Before you begin, gather the following:
- Your gift - suitable for books and anything similar shaped
- Some beautiful Wrapping paper
- Scissors
- Tape (double-sided tape if you have it)
- Ribbon
- A greetings card or gift voucher chocolate or choice of surprise
Once you have everything ready, follow the step-by-step guide below to create your hidden card pocket.
Step 1: Trim the wrapping paper
Place your book like so (see image) leaving enough paper either side and trim it length ways
Tip: keep all your off cuts (we have plans for them in a coming tutorial)
Step Two:
Line up the paper flush with the gift like so…
Step Three:
Fold the bottom section diagonally across, like this…

Step Four:
Grab the diagonal section and wrap around the gift taking it to the back.
Step Five:
Tape the end to the back of the gift
Step Six:
Next you need to simply fold and wrap the top and bottom section as you would any gift .
Step Seven:
Ta Da! It’s as simple as that, simply tuck your chosen item/s into the box and wrap your ribbon round for a truly unique gifting experience.
